Pregnancy brings lots of new experiences and lots of questions. One question you probably never thought you’d be asking is this: Can I eat pineapple when pregnant? And what about bananas?

People say a LOT of things about what to eat and what not to eat while pregnant…it can get super confusing.

So let’s break down this one today so you know whether or not you should ditch these fruits until your baby is born.

Fruit is Good For You

Let me reassure you: fruit is good for you. It’s not suddenly bad for you once you’re growing a baby. Eating a variety of fruits during pregnancy is safe and beneficial for your health and your baby’s health.

Like most things, balance is key. If you only eat pineapple, your body probably isn’t going to love it. If you eat bananas at every meal, your body might not like that either. Any food, eaten too much, can be detrimental. (Well, except veggies, but most people aren’t overeating in that category.)

So don’t be afraid of fruit. Wash it then eat it. And enjoy it!

With that in mind, let’s talk about bananas.

Banana Benefits

Bananas are such a classic fruit. And they are nutritious too! Bananas are rich in fiber, contain natural sugars and carbs for energy, and contain lots of essential vitamins and minerals.

The most concentrated nutrient found in bananas is potassium. One banana contains about 400 mg of potassium. For comparison, an apple has about 195 mg, less than half that of a banana.

Potassium plays important roles in our bodies, including supporting nerve function and muscle contraction (including the muscle that is your heart!).

Bananas also boast a fair share of vitamin B6, which may help ease nausea and morning sickness.

Consumption Caution

The main reason bananas get flagged as dangerous when pregnant is, paradoxically, because of potassium. If potassium levels in the body get too high, it can cause nausea and vomiting, weakness, irregular heart rhythms, and more.

But it’s hard to get too much potassium. In fact, some experts say you can’t have too much if you’re getting potassium naturally from food.

What’s more, bananas aren’t even the food with the highest concentration of potassium. Tomato paste, yams, spinach, and potatoes all contain more potassium per serving than bananas do.

In case you aren’t convinced yet, here’s some math for you: some say the upper limit of potassium intake is 3,500 mg. Even if that was the case, you’d have to eat more than 8 bananas in one day to exceed that.

Moral of the story? Just eat the banana.

Pineapple Positives

If you’re a fan of pineapple, I’ve got good news for you: it’s safe and even healthy for pregnant women.

Pineapple contains nutrients like vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, magnesium, folate, and more. If you’re familiar with your prenatal nutrient needs, that’s a pretty impressive list! Funnily enough, pineapple also contains potassium (about 180 mg per cup).

Intake Insights

I guess I’m loving alliterations today. Anywho…

Here’s the deal with pineapple: people say you shouldn’t eat it when pregnant because of something called bromelain. Bromelain is a naturally occurring enzyme found in pineapple. It is sometimes used as a treatment for inflammation.

If you were to get a lot of bromelain while pregnant, that might cause problems. (So don’t go taking bromelain tablets.)

But bromelain in pineapple is actually most concentrated in the core, which we don’t usually eat. The amount in the flesh, which we do eat, is so low that it’s quite unlikely to cause any problems.

Pineapple and Heartburn

The other possible concern with pineapple when pregnant stems from its acidity. Because of the high acid content, pineapple—especially in large amounts—may aggravate heartburn for some pregnant women.

However, some women experience heartburn because there isn’t enough acid in their stomach. For those women, pineapple may actually help relieve heartburn.

If you struggle with heartburn during pregnancy, try eating a small amount of pineapple to test whether it seems to help or make the heartburn worse. If it helps, eat up!

Conclusion: Fruit is Safe

To sum up: pineapple and bananas are safe and nutritious when you are pregnant.

The risks with potassium, bromelain, and acidity are very small. Unless you’re allergic or have strong personal preferences, go ahead and eat that banana and enjoy your pineapple. Your body will probably thank you.

Until next time,

Allison
