I like to think of birth preparation as having 3 pillars: physical, mental, and emotional.

They are all interconnected but are distinctly important as we anticipate the life-changing experience of birth.

In this blog post, we’ll talk about one aspect of mental preparation: the role of positive birth affirmations.

Birth affirmations can help reduce fear, increase confidence, and empower you to have the happy, healthy birth you want.

More Than Words

While affirmations can seem like mere words on a page, they can be far more than that when utilized well. The power of affirmations lies in the fact that our thoughts are our reality. Our mental self-talk is who we are and it shapes our view of the world and our experiences.

That means that repeating positive birth affirmations isn’t just an effort to convince yourself of something you don’t yet believe. It is a way to actually change your mindset and your energy as you approach the day of birth.

When paired with the internal work of processing emotions and releasing negative beliefs, using birth affirmations can transform your birth experience and make it beautiful, sacred, and memorable in all the ways you want.

Why Mindset Matters

Positive birth affirmations are powerful tools for a more comfortable and effective labor. Changing your mindset through affirmations works for four main reasons. The first has to do with the fear-tension-pain cycle.

The Fear-Tension-Pain Cycle

If a woman is afraid to give birth, she holds that fear as tension in her body. It’s like how people say they’re “paralyzed with fear” or why you might squeeze someone’s hand really hard during a scary movie.

Tense muscles are a biologically normal response to fear; it’s part of our “fight or flight” mechanism.

But tension makes muscle contraction more painful. When contractions get more painful, mom gets more scared, either because she’s afraid of the pain or because it seems like her comfort measures aren’t working.

That fear leads to more tension, and so the cycle continues.

Filling your mind with positive affirmations helps to combat the fear and tension and therefore the pain.

The Power of Focused Redirection

Positive birth affirmations are also a way to utilize the labor comfort measure that I call Focused Redirection. It’s a bit like distraction but is different in important ways.

The basic idea is that your mind can’t focus on more than one thing at once. So if you intentionally focus your mind on some other thing, you don’t perceive as much pain or discomfort.

Repeating positive phrases to yourself during contractions helps pull your mind away from the intensity and thus helps it seem easier to handle.

The Mind-Body Connection

You are one whole, and that whole includes your body and your mind. If your body and mind aren’t working together, they are probably working against one another.

Using positive birth affirmations helps encourage mind-body connection, which helps your mind to get out of the way and allow your body to direct labor as it knows how.

The Role of Hormones

Your hormones run the show during labor (and pregnancy and postpartum). Especially if you give birth unmedicated, maintaining a positive mindset is key to helping your body release the hormones it needs to proceed through labor effectively.

How to Use Positive Birth Affirmations

All that said, affirmations only do you good if you know how to use them. So let’s chat about exactly what to do with the birth affirmations you’re about to learn.

Choose Your Own Affirmations

First, I recommend you personally choose each affirmation based on how your body and mind respond to it. As I list possible affirmations below, notice if it feels good to you. If it does, add it to your personal list. If you don’t connect with it or it doesn’t feel good in your body or mind, leave it.

And if any other affirmations come to mind while going through my list, write those down! Trust your body and mind to know what it needs.

Write Them Down

Second, once you have your list of affirmations that are right for you, I encourage you to write them each down BY HAND. Research has repeatedly shown that writing things down by hand (or drawing, if that’s your style!) helps us retain information much better than typing on a keyboard.

Plus, positive writing helps to reduce anxiety.

So if you want to get the most out of your affirmations, write them by hand.

Use Them Often

Third, use your chosen, written affirmations throughout pregnancy and labor. You can repeat your affirmations every day, or as often as you like. You may want to prepare birth affirmation cards to hang up around your birth space as visual reminders during labor.

As labor gets more intense, repeating a short affirmation such as “I can” may be helpful to you. You may also find it helpful to have your husband or partner or other member of your birth team say affirmations to you.

Consider how you’d like to use affirmations before labor begins so your birth team can be prepared to support you in the ways you’d like.
